Marine Myth Busters Volume II

July 12, 2011

We address common marine associated myths on a daily basis.  Here are a few more of the most common myths we hear regarding boat registration and boat operator licenses.

Myth: Boats don’t have to be registered with Transport Canada.

Fact: It is the law to register your watercraft with Transport Canada if it has a 10 Hp or greater engine and display the appropriate size registration numbers on the boat.  You are also required to keep a copy of the registration in the boat.  Failure to comply can cost you up to $250 in fines.

Myth: You don’t need a Pleasure Craft Operator’s License to drive a small boat.

Fact: As of Sept. 15th, 2009 you are required by law to possess a Pleasure Craft Operator’s License to operate any powered vessel.  Even a canoe with an electric motor requires the operator to have a Pleasure Craft Operator’s License.
