2012 Sterndrive Emission Standards

October 15, 2011

As of January 1st, 2012 new emission regulations governing all new sterndrive engines being sold in Canada will change the boating industry dramatically.  New sterndrive engines will have to be fuel injected and catalyzed.  Fuel injected sterndrives have been around for years and a lot of boaters have paid a premium for fuel injection, but as of January 1st, 2012 all sterndrive boats will also have to have catalytic converters which will add a substantial cost (approximately $2,000) to your purchase.  A lot of dealers and boaters are taking advantage of early 2012 fall orders to purchase non-catalyzed engines.  If you are considering a new boat for the 2012 season you may want to start shopping early and find yourself a new sterndrive boat without an expensive catalyzed engine.  If you’d like to learn more about catalyzed marine engines click here: http://www.powerboatmag.com/marine-engine-catalytic-converters.html to read an article by PowerBoat, the World’s Leading Perfomance Boating Magazine.
